ENS DAO survey proposal

Proposal summary

This proposal outlines a comprehensive research and analysis project focused on the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) community. Our team will conduct desk research, design and conduct a survey resistant to Sybil attacks/bots, and analyze the data collected to generate valuable insights and intelligence. We will then publish this information publicly to benefit all ENS ecosystem stakeholders.
This project will be executed with attention to detail and a commitment to providing high-quality deliverables. The end result will be a comprehensive report that offers valuable insights into the usage patterns, pains, and preferences of ENS community members, who actively use ENS domains. We call this key segment “The 1%”.

Who we are?

datalatte and surveylatte are two-sided dApps that allow users to anonymize, tokenize, and monetize their data so that this data can then be used by web3 projects to gain insights and market information. To see a demo of our product, visit datalatte.com/datalatte2go.

Value creation for ENS Ecosystem

0. Desk Research and Stakeholder interview

Every research and design process begins with the discovery phase, where we identify the most pressing questions and pain points to address. In this case, we have already completed preliminary desk research, data analysis, and stakeholder interviews with ENS.vision. This initial work will help guide the rest of the project and ensure that we are focused on the most important issues facing the ENS community.

 Even though we have already collected a significant amount of information, we are open to conducting additional discovery interviews or workshops to better understand the research needs of the ENS ecosystem. This will help ensure that our study is comprehensive and addresses the most pressing issues facing the community. We are committed to working closely with stakeholders to identify the best ways to bring value to the ENS ecosystem.

1. BOT-proof community engagement with financial rewards

Research recruitment is challenging due to the motivation-participation dilemma:

We have a recruitment pipeline that solves this problem by only allowing ENS holders to participate, and using algorithmic and manual service design solutions to minimize Sybil abuse. Participants will receive stable coins, $ETH, or $ENS as rewards, plus reputation tokens from datalatte.

2. Quantitative ENS ecosystem research benefiting broad ecosystem projects

The ENSlatte survey is designed to gather insights into the usage patterns, pains, and preferences of ENS community members, who actively use ENS domains. We call this key segment “The 1%”:

Our team of data scientists will analyze the survey results and publish them, providing valuable information to native ENS projects that can help them build applications that better serve the needs of the community. This information will be valuable for stakeholders looking to support the continued growth and development of the ENS ecosystem.

Aims of the research

  • *We need to identify and understand Pioneers, The 1%: who use ENS domains for actual applications. details
  • We need to sophisticate speculator segmentation (The 99%-s) details
  • With this data, we can predict needs and preferences about subdomains, not only to increase engagement and trading activity but for ideas for integrations and new use cases and more effective onboarding details
    • This structured data can be analyzed with NLP tools and provide more than trend forecasts. It is a rich source of data and product ideas and implicit expectations.

3. ENS domain & subdomain integration

Click here🔗 to see the detailed description

ENS domains provide a unique opportunity to bypass the wallet connecting process for collecting survey data, allowing users to fill out surveys quickly and easily without needing to sign transactions. This makes it easier for mobile users to collect survey data, reducing the mobile user churn rate.

4. Subdomain generation feature integration

The ENSlatte survey is only open to ENS holders, but in future surveys conducted for non-ENS users, we will implement ENS subdomain minting of xxx.datalatte.eth for those who do not have their own ENS domain. The technical details of this product are beyond the scope of this proposal, but we will be sure to participate in relevant discussions about L2 subdomain minting in the appropriate subgroups.

Deliverables, roadmap and budget

  1. ENS ecosystem research, 23th Dec 22
As part of our pre-research on the ENS ecosystem and its stakeholders, we have conducted desk research to identify the most well-known ENS projects. We also interviewed ENS.vision, one of the ecosystem’s most popular projects, to understand their pain points and the type of insights they would find most valuable. We are open to conducting additional interviews with interested stakeholders to help refine the design of our survey.
    1.5k$ :coin::coin::coin:

  2. ENSlatte survey design, 5th Jan 23
Our team of psychologists and data scientists has expertise in creating surveys and has previously designed surveys for our dApp to gather insights about our users’ habits and interests. This survey will be specifically targeted at the ENS community and will aim to gather information about their holdings, interests, and demographic and background information. We are well-equipped to design a survey that will provide valuable insights about the ENS community.

  3. ENSlatte survey conducting, 10th Jan 23
By integrating ENS domain support into our mobile app, members of the ENS community will be able to easily access the survey from their pocket and earn rewards for participating. We have also designed anti-spam modules and data quality filters to ensure that only genuine respondents are included in the survey results. This will help us generate accurate and reliable insights about the ENS community.
    3.5k$ :coin::coin::coin::coin::coin::coin::coin: +
    5.0k$ :coin::coin::coin::coin::coin::coin::coin::coin::coin::coin: - for the 1000 ENS holders (5$ per respondent)
(we are open to resizing the sample size and creating a pilot first.)

  4. ENSlatte insights publication, 25th Jan 23
Once the survey is complete, our data analysts and scientists will run analytics and computations on the collected data to generate relevant insights for the ecosystem. These insights will be published for the benefit of all stakeholders, providing valuable information that can support the growth and development of the ENS ecosystem.

My main concern with something like this is that it won’t attract a representative slice of the community. Respondents will be a mix of 1) People for whom $5 is a meaningful reward, and 2) Bots.

First of all, thank you for submitting this proposal!

Can I ask you, what is the rationale of this applied to ENS? You mentioned the motivation-participation dilemma, is it a general assessment or is it specific to ENS, and if so, can you provide an example of it?

I think incentives like these can become quite dangerous, due to the change the produce in the cultural layer of an organisation. Governance wise, it doesn’t connect directly since we have a delegation system that won’t be helped with this.

I think this is needed. The first point of the 1%. I would love this but more focus on community and less about money making. There are a lot of projects, builders and pioneers that are invisible due to lack of time or simply because of time zone interfering with them engaging on the social layer.

Do you have some previous work on this end to share?

You also mention the idea of a Token, and tokenization, Can you explain further? Because agreeing to be part of a project that implies the use of their own token, could be seeing a conflict.

Re 2)
Your concerns about bots are valid, as this is a well-known issue among web3 research professionals. That is why our team at datalatte spent time building our own in-house survey tool, which can substantially reduce the possibility of a Sybil attack by leveraging web3 reputation & DID solutions and attracting only high-quality data. Additionally, we use non-technical service design methods to minimize duplicate participants.

However, we are in a difficult position regarding sharing details publicly, as doing so may defeat the purpose. We are able to discuss our approach in more detail via private message or a 15-minute call if you would like.

Re 1)

If we wanted to predict the political activity of the entire ENS community, such as in a census or pre-election poll, your concern would be valid. However, we do not aim to represent the entire community. Not only because of feasibility issues, but also because our preliminary research and data analysis show valuable possibilities for gaining insight about the segment we call “The Pioneers, The 1%”. We believe that representing this segment is an achievable goal.

They are more active in the community where we would recruit participants, and less motivated by financial incentives. In our private market research practice, we have seen genuine participation interest from individuals with net worths of $100k or more for less than $2 (we can provide examples of this in private).

Can I ask you, what is the rationale of this applied to ENS?

What differentiates those digital products/features that:

  • are successful, and people keep using them
  • that put a lot of resources into it but ultimately fail?

The latter failed to understand their user’s needs. The latter built something, that everybody was thinking is a good idea, except the users.

Product research is one of the best methods for gain insights and perspectives about users’ needs, and the pains and possibilities of a product.

Think of it like a poll, not as an election.

We think of this proposal not as direct communication with the community to decide something, but more like research/investigation to gain insights about possible product use cases and needs.

The output is an analysis, and then the community can decide how to interpret and utilize that. This proposal is only about research.

You mentioned the motivation-participation dilemma, is it a general assessment or is it specific to ENS, and if so, can you provide an example of it?
can you provide an example of it?

The motivation-participation dilemma is familiar to every researcher who has ever had to recruit participants. To conduct successful product research, you need data, you need participants.

Let’s be honest, participating in surveys or interviews are not that fun, and time-consuming, even if could lead to irreplaceable and super-useful insights. It is also difficult to get people to vote (you have to decide on one or two questions), so what do we expect for a 5-10 minute survey?

But every successful digital service has product research in its toolbox at some point. We hope the ENS community will use us for this purpose.

“I think this is needed. The first point of the 1%. I would love this but more focus on community and less about money making. There are a lot of projects, builders and pioneers that are invisible due to lack of time or simply because of time zone interfering with them engaging on the social layer.”

We are happy that we are on the same page. We hope you give us a chance by voting to yes on this proposal because we truly believe that the Pioneers are worth finding, understand, and listen better. Click here for more detail.

At the same time, we think that those who speculate on ENS domains are also an important part of the community, so understanding their motives and preferences better, can be a viable goal also. Click here for more detail

Our hypothesis is that a little part of the “speculators” could be “converted” to Pioneers also, but to test this we need to run research.

You also mention the idea of a Token, and tokenization, Can you explain further? Because agreeing to be part of a project that implies the use of their own token, could be seeing a conflict.

It is important to emphasize that the primary offering of our proposal came from the third circle. We want to create value for ENS by research as a service. If we can use our products [surveylatte, datalatte] that’s good for us, but not the primary goal.

The reputation tokens mentioned are similar to POAPs which can identify high-quality data contributors when participating in future surveys on our platform. However, if the ENS community sees this in conflict with the ENS domain (NFTs), we do not include this as part of the reward.

I second your thoughts

I am very thankful that you took the time to prepare this presentation. I am sure you have put hours of time and energy and thought into this.

My honest opinion–I really don’t understand this. There is just way too much going on.

comprehensive research, surveys, bots, rewards, recruitment, scammers, by-passing wallets, psychologists?

So you want the ENS DAO to pay (who?) group people (that you have already identified of abusing your system?) to pay people in the DAO? And document all of it?.

I’m lost. Too much going on here. I see corporate scheme, not ‘here for the team’.
No offense.
