Changing the default registration period from 1 year to 5 years at app.ens.domains

While we are getting feedback on Rethinking the registration/renewal model for ENS, we also would like to have your thoughts on changing the default registration year on our ENS app from 1 year to 5 years (without any change on the actual price).

We asked once on Twitter and Discord.

We also conducted small A/B testing where 10 % of traffic to either go to 0 year or 5 years.

The intention of this experiment was to see the impact on registration rate and renewal length. Though the initial result showed that 5 years have significantly higher conversion than 0 years (while less difference between the original 1 year and 5 years) the method was in lack of some metrics so we are considering to fix and redo the test.

NOTE

  • Even though it was stated in the Twitter poll, changing the default is to save gas cost by registering for a longer period, rather than preventing from accidentally forgetting to renew because the change will NOT solve the fact that people forget regardless of the renewal length.
  • Any notion of price increase/discount is out of scope for this thread (because it is already discussed in a different thread. Please continue the discussion there).
  • The default is the default. Users can still change their length as they wish.

Go for it! I think it’d also be nice to show the users how much they save including gas and/or discounts.
