ENS Contract Naming Season

Off the back of the successful DAO vote, ENS Contract Naming Season has now been formally announced (X, Farcaster)!

Much of what follows has been taken from the announcement post on the Enscribe blog. However, we want to use the forum to be able to share wins about contract naming season as they happen with the community here, and other key updates.

What is Contract Naming Season?

Contract Naming Season is a collaborative effort between the ENS DAO, Enscribe and others to help projects name their smart contracts using ENS names, turning unreadable hexadecimal addresses into human-readable, trustworthy names.

To encourage adoption, the ENS DAO has created a 10,000 ENS reward pool, offering incentives to teams that name their contracts and help lead others to do the same.

Why it Matters

Every time users interact with a smart contract, they’re asked to trust a long, meaningless hex address.

Not only does this make Ethereum harder to use, it leaves users exposed to address spoofing and phishing attacks from scammers.

Millions of dollars is lost every year to address spoofing and poisoning attacks on Ethereum.

Enscribe was created to address these issues. It’s a smart contract naming service built on ENS.

It allows developers and projects to easily name their smart contracts with ENS names. This creates human-readable, trustworthy identities for contracts, turning unreadable hexadecimal addresses into meaningful names.

Where it’s Happening

Enscribe is live on Ethereum and integrates directly with ENS and contract verification platforms like Etherscan, Blockscout and Sourcify.

We’ve integrated with projects like Safe, Ethereum Follow Protocol and Open Labels Initiative to make contract naming a new standard for increased safety for Ethereum’s users.

Voices From the Community

ENS has always been about empowering the Ethereum community to name and own their digital identities. Contract Naming Season continues that mission — helping developers, DAOs, and protocols give their smart contracts names users can trust.

— nick.eth, Creator of ENS

All smart contracts should be named onchain, for security, readability, and transparency. Contract Naming Season with Enscribe is a great opportunity to finally get it done.

— brantly.eth, Executive Director, Ethereum Identity Foundation, ENS DAO Delegate, ex-Director of Operations, ENS

Naming Season captures what makes ENS, DAOs and Ethereum special — community-led initiatives that drive our ecosystem forward! It’s actions like naming contracts that build the culture of safety and transparency we all depend on.

— james.eth, Fire Eyes DAO, ENS DAO Delegate

Named contracts upgrade security and enhance UX. Promoting awareness of contract naming opportunities across protocols, DAOs, and apps through Contract Naming Season is a key step forward for the Ethereum community.

As we announce notable projects naming their contracts, we will post here so that forum participants can get some insight into how contract naming season has been going.

The first of these to announce publicly is Nouns DAO.

There are more to follow!

Today Cork Protocol have announced they’ve named their protocol contracts as part of contract naming season.

They’re especially notable as they’re positioning contract naming as a key component of their wider Security Framework for DeFi protocols.

Sharing a couple of updates:

1/ A couple of weeks back Based Nouns announced they’ve named their protocol contracts as part of contract naming season.

2/ Today, Blockscout have announced their contract identity scoring widget.

Enscribe provides the scoring based on what type of ENS name the contract has (none/forward resolving only/primary) and if metadata is set.

Last week the first disbursements were sent out as part of Contract Naming Season. 4,665 ENS has now been distributed across 31 teams and individuals.

As part of the awards distribution, we’ve encouraged recipients to consider delegating their ENS rather than simply selling it, and provided some guidance in the post above.

If you’re interested in seeing the specific awards that were made, the following read-only spreadsheet provides a full breakdown.

Today we’ve completed the second round of disbursements for Contract Naming Season.

An additional 2,430 ENS were distributed across 19 teams and individuals.

If you’d like to see the specific awards that were made, the following spreadsheet provides a breakdown. This information will also be added to the ENS Awards page.

Later this week, a wrap-up post on ENS Contract Naming Season will be published, covering these awards and our learnings.

Following the disbursement of our second batch of ENS tokens, the Naming Season initiative has come to a close.

We’ve just published our wrap-up post containing reflections on it.

We’re grateful to the ENS community for supporting this initiative, especially those who connected us with teams and amplified our work. Particular thanks to @James for making it happen in the first place.

It is our hope that similar initiatives for new teams can emerge to give them an opportunity to prove their value to the ENS community before looking toward more significant opportunities such as SPP.

During naming season, eight notable protocols including SSV Network, Cork Protocol, Liquity, Giveth, Superfluid, Nouns DAO, Based Nouns DAO, and Kleros named their contracts using ENS, with active discussions underway with Aztec, Human Tech, Octant, and Pyth Network.

7,095 of the available 10,000 ENS were disbursed to teams and individuals. The remaining tokens would have been allocated if some of the additional projects had completed their naming whilst Naming Season was running.

This leaves the question of what to do with the remaining ENS.

The two options that stand out to us are:

  1. Return to the DAO.
  2. Keep aside as awards for other teams naming their contracts (with awards of 500-1000 ENS being allocated to well-known teams who do this).

We’re interested to hear from the DAO community on their thoughts on this. Option 1 is cleaner as it requires no further coordination. We’d welcome thoughts on the thread over the next week or two if anyone has reason to prefer option 2.

Great job! As an active observer and multisig signer, I’m thoroughly satisfied with the work the ENScribe team has done over the past six months.

DID NOT DISAPPOINT! :clap:t2:

Yeah, I think holding $ENS in the multisig for season 2 makes sense (if there’s appetite for it).

Curious to hear what other multisig signers and delegates think.
