ENS Contract Naming Season

Following the disbursement of our second batch of ENS tokens, the Naming Season initiative has come to a close.

We’ve just published our wrap-up post containing reflections on it.

We’re grateful to the ENS community for supporting this initiative, especially those who connected us with teams and amplified our work. Particular thanks to @James for making it happen in the first place.

It is our hope that similar initiatives for new teams can emerge to give them an opportunity to prove their value to the ENS community before looking toward more significant opportunities such as SPP.

During naming season, eight notable protocols including SSV Network, Cork Protocol, Liquity, Giveth, Superfluid, Nouns DAO, Based Nouns DAO, and Kleros named their contracts using ENS, with active discussions underway with Aztec, Human Tech, Octant, and Pyth Network.

7,095 of the available 10,000 ENS were disbursed to teams and individuals. The remaining tokens would have been allocated if some of the additional projects had completed their naming whilst Naming Season was running.

This leaves the question of what to do with the remaining ENS.

The two options that stand out to us are:

  1. Return to the DAO.
  2. Keep aside as awards for other teams naming their contracts (with awards of 500-1000 ENS being allocated to well-known teams who do this).

We’re interested to hear from the DAO community on their thoughts on this. Option 1 is cleaner as it requires no further coordination. We’d welcome thoughts on the thread over the next week or two if anyone has reason to prefer option 2.
