Hi everyone,
I’m Manoj from India, a DAO governance researcher who has been following ENS DAO and recently started exploring the forum more deeply. This is my first post here, so apologies in advance if I miss any local norms.
While going through the categories and documentation, I noticed that ENS uses the term “Meta-Governance” for one of its Working Groups and for a forum category related to DAO governance and management. From the docs and ecosystem material it’s clear that this refers to governance of the DAO itself (oversight of governance processes, working groups, treasury, etc.), not to Meta (the company) or any metaverse product.
However, from a UX and onboarding perspective, the word “Meta” is heavily associated with Facebook/Meta for many new users, especially those coming from Web2 or non‑technical backgrounds. In my experience explaining DAOs in India and other emerging markets, people often initially read “Meta-Governance” as something related to Meta/Facebook, and only later understand that it actually means “governance of governance” in the DAO context.
Because ENS is a very visible project and an entry point into Ethereum for many users, I wanted to share a small piece of feedback and a suggestion:
-
Keep the “Meta-Governance” name (it’s already established in ENS and in governance theory), but add very explicit clarification in user‑facing places. For example:
-
In the forum category description, something like: “Meta-Governance – discussion of changes to the DAO’s own governance (not related to Meta/Facebook).”
-
In the basics / docs pages that describe the Meta-Governance Working Group, add a one‑line definition: “Meta-governance here means ‘governance of governance’ – design and oversight of ENS DAO’s processes, working groups and treasury.”
-
-
Optionally, a small glossary or FAQ line like: “Why do we call it Meta-Governance? In ENS, this refers to governance of the DAO’s rules and structures, not to Meta (the company).”
I think even 1–2 short clarifications like this could reduce confusion for new contributors and make onboarding a bit smoother, especially for non‑native English speakers and people who are still mapping Web2 mental models onto Web3 governance.
Would love to hear if others have observed similar confusion, and if stewards/community think such clarifications would be helpful.
Thanks for reading,
