Delegate communication threads in ENS

I came across this single delegate thread by @DAOplomats.eth, along with @Coltron.eth reply that ā€˜delegate platform’ posts are not the norm in ENS.

Why is that the case?

Delegate threads can be quite informative for the wider community, helping to hold delegates to account, and highlight potential areas of conflict. Most other DAOs follow a similar standard.

How would this standard be implemented in ENS? Could it be? Why/why not?

Disclaimer: delegate threads are also helpful for what I’m building around delegate profiles, so I have a bias towards having them :upside_down_face:

Daveytea,
That post and comment might be the only time it’s ever been discussed explicitly here in the forum.

While not mutually exclusive, we do very much encourage delegates to share their opinions and feelings in real time in the forum thread associated with each proposal or temp check. There’s higher signal when a delegate’s position can be seen in context in the fabric of the specific proposal’s discussion.

If a delegate’s time and attention are limited and valuable, having them post in the active discussion would be more valuable than a delegate thread. Some of our delegates often attach a link to their forum comment as their ā€œvoting reasonā€ as well.

If you, or anyone else, is ever looking for a composite of a specific delegate, the forum does a great job of collating posts, replies, likes, etc. on the user’s profile page.
For instance, here’s yours. And here’s your list of posts and here’s your topics created.

Thanks for initiating this conversation @daveytea We kickstarted a discussion a while ago about [Discussion] What an 'effective delegate' means to the ENS DAO in order to gather consensus on effective delegate engagement with the DAO.

I do think leading by example is the best way to start and encourage others to get the snowball rolling. However a more DAOwide adoption requires consensus on the topic we started discussing earlier on the role of an effective delegate. I also think having this as a ā€˜to-do’ item on the @Meta-Gov_Stewards Kanban can be a nice way to dedicate resources on this topic. So far i do not see any public methodology to suggest ā€˜to-dos’ to the WGs task list tho.

Can you cite some examples?

I think it’s a nice sentiment, but identifying ā€˜effective delegates’ is subjective at this point, and individuals may have differing opinions on the definition. Additionally, it feels counterproductive to impose a definition through top-down processes.

Sure, here are some random ones via a search for ā€˜delegate thread’ and ā€˜delegate platform’. You can do so yourself here (disclaimer: i’m the founder of x23)

There’s more I could pull up but i’ll stop there

I think for most of these DAOs it started off as ā€˜social consensus’ to implement it, then was later codified due to the value it brought to voters/delegates. I understand that you wouldn’t want to add more onus on delegates, since they are already busy enough, but with the new crop of potentially ā€˜incentivised’ delegates maybe this could become a requirement/standard?

Can’t we encourage delegates to leave their comments on Snapshot for offchain proposals and on Tally for onchain proposals? Another idea would be to build a separate UI to view their positions, although delegates may choose not to share their rationale regardless.

There are already platforms offering enhanced insights into delegate positions (see an example here), albeit without comments.

I am guessing what you’d likely aim to develop for x23ai is a UI that allows one to better understand delegate rationale.

I can envision a near future where one could review a delegate’s voting history over time, extrapolate an understanding of their voter sentiment, and perhaps even analyze psychographics—very interesting indeed.

Yes I think anything is better than nothing, and if this is already happening then that is great! I will check and see how we can make use of that…

Yes, correct - both from an objective and subjective view. More news to come!
