  • ENSIP-16 is an improvement for offchain names like cb.id names, enabling them to be visible on applications like ENS manager app.
  • The proposal was published a few days ago as a draft. Authors are inviting feedback.

[DRAFT] Gasless DNS names in ENS

  • Last week, Gasless DNSSEC was deployed on Sepolia - View the deployment on this GitHub PR.
  • DNSSEC allows anyone to use existing DNS web domains in the ENS ecosystem for free.
  • Gregskril is working on a DNSSEC document and shared this on the call.
    • Document & demos are still being polished and will be released soon.
  • The technical implementation of DNSSEC and its benefits were discussed.
    • The process involves setting a single text record (TXT) on the DNS domain, enabling resolution in wallets like Metamask.
  • A question was raised about how updates to other DNS records would work, with flexibility mentioned.
    • Developers and labs are exploring different options, including a gateway server for more record flexibility.
  • Discussion covered trust assumptions and the role of the gateway server (deployed here).
  • Suggestions were made to align primary names with similar mechanisms to enhance adoption and safety.
  • The balance between cost-effectiveness, adoption, and potential risks in the ENS ecosystem was acknowledged, with the potential for reversibility also being highlighted.

  • Refund options have been discussed on the forum and in past Metagov, Ecosystem & Public Goods WG calls.
  • Option A was selected from the two options.
  • @matoken.eth will move forward with making an onchain governance proposal.
  • This will be aimed for end of September as part of the monthly DAO Voting Window.
  • @gregskril clarified the technical process of the refund.
    • ETH will be sent to a multisig, which will send transaction to affected users, and what is not spent on gas will transfer back to the DAO.

  • A significant update to ownership management, within their Manager app is under way, with rollout expected in the coming weeks.

Web 3 Starter Kit

2. Project Highlights

  • Premm and Thomas gave an update and demo of unruggable subdomains.
  • The product aims to make ENS subname registrations cheaper and more accessible using L2 solutions like Optimism.
  • Technical features include ERC4337 implementation, use of NameWrapper and the ETH Reg controller.
  • The live demo showcased registration and configuration of subnames on Layer 2.
    • Thomas shared his ‘ENS Whois’ tool on ethtools.com as an easy way to view these newly created subnames.
  • The aim is to make ENS names the primary way of creating smart accounts in the future.
    • Integrating ENS name registration directly into the process of creating smart accounts (see ERC4337) streamlines user experience, with one-click process, all potentially in a gasless manner.
  • Cross chain gateways, L2 compatibility, rollups and more were discussed.
  • They acknowledged existing challenges and limitations of L2.
    • The Project is design so that L2 names can be ‘upgraded’ to L1 for enhanced security.

“The first onchain web domain registrar, supporting .com, .xyz, .box, and many more TLDs. Bring your domain onchain!”

  • George Beall shared information about 3DNS and their goal to bring existing web domains onchain.
  • They are focusing on seamless UX to attract traditional domain customers, and develop custom solutions for bulk domain buyers/managers.
  • Discussion included:
    • Their dual system of an offchain registrar that becomes read-only after domain is migrated onchain.
    • Legal considerations regarding ownership revocation in cases of explicit breaches of UDPR.
    • Issues around delegating permissions for multiple wallets to manage domains. And their developing custom implementations e.g. with gnosis safe.
  • A Beta rollout is planned for next week.
    • Existing domains will be able to transfer onchain shortly after launch.
    • Keep an eye out for a demo in the coming weeks.
  • Open to collaboration on advancing onchain domain functionality and exploring use cases like domains as collateral and fractional ownership.

3. ENS grants are live!

ENS Grants has been running for over a year now and this time around we are in the arena trying things. The voting system was changed from token weighted voting to instead use NFT based voting where 1 NFT = 1 vote. The mechanism to the distributon of this NFT is not public as of yet. 15 ETH is up for grabs for 10 different projects in conjunction with the grants round the Public Goods Working Group is running.   • Agora has been updated, with work funded by MetaGov WG, and it’s encouraged to try it out and give feedback.

Proposal Updates on Telegram

  • Stay up to date on active ENS DAO proposals by subscribing to the ‘notification-only’ Telegram channel.

ENS Workshop, ETHGlobal

  • Many from ENS DAO, ENS Labs and community attended the ETHGlobal New York Hackathon.
  • Several on the WG call were also there building, and the Hackathon has led to a lot of good feedback for developer ideas.
  • There were many cool projects and winners, and the intention to get some several of those projects on the call in the coming weeks to present.

Dev Side - Developer workshop

  • GregSkril delivered a workshop titled, “Identity in Your Apps”. - watch it on youtube

frENSday was announced last week.

  • It will be the opening event in Istanbul on Nov 13th
  • If you have something to share and would like to participate go to the site, check it out and apply to speak.
  • There is also a volunteer page to get more community involved.
  • More information on registration, speakers and events will be released in next few days and weeks.
    On call Feedback/discussion
    • mailchain (verycozy.eth) gave oncall feedback they were not able to make multiple frENSday speaker submissions on behalf of teammembers.
      • Less than 20 minutes later GregSkril gave an update this was fixed.

New Hires

  • ENS labs has hired a new QA person - Sukendu goes by SG. They will be focusing on making sure any code rolled out is of high quality and has fewer bugs (or none).

3. Project Highlights

Alex Plutta (ENS | Twitter) from Resolv3R (with DM3)

  • Alex Plutta provided an update of the Resolv3r, a project built at ETHPrague, which seeks to make ens records on L2, to address the high transaction costs of L1.
  • Resolv3r utilises their CCIP-Resolver for general data retrieval and ENS-Bedrock-Resolver for the functionality of retrieving and verifying onchain data. They aim to add additional chains and integrations over time.
  • Resolv3r is open source, supported through public goods funding.

  • lightwalker gave a preview of NameGuard, a project the Namehash team have been building.
    • Nameguard is upcoming open-source infrastructure aiming to make ENS safer and set to launch in late October.

5. Small Grants

  • This is an experimental Small Grants round, comprising 4 pieces of tech being built.
  • The NFT Contract has been deployed.
    • All addresses of those eligible to vote have been collected.
    • The NFT that is the ability to vote is non transferrable on Optimism mainnet.
    • The NFT Token has not been sent out yet. It will be sent, after a few more proposals are manually added.
  • The new snapshot voting strategy has been setup.
    • Work continues to make sure the front end works with the new strategy.
  • When ready, the opening of Voting will be promoted across working group calls, the Forum, and on twitter.

Gasless DNSSEC has been deployed on Sepolia!

Gasless DNSSEC allows DNS name owners to use their existing domains in the web3 ecosystem for free. For instructions on how to turn DNS names into ENS on the Sepolia testnet, follow the instructions here.

Ownership Tab

A new tab called the Ownership tab has been added to the ENS App in efforts to make the relationship between owners and managers more intuitive.

It was announced that @Premm.eth is the winner of the ENS Fellowship Grant, he’s excited to continue heads down building on ENS and is looking forward to meeting others at Devconnect.

3. Project Highlights

Fluidkey | Antonio Seveso

Fluidkey was the winner of the overall ENS prize at ETH Rome and came to the call to present their hackathon project.

Fluidkey allows a user to generate an infinite amount of stealth addresses when resolving ENS names. Using ENS offchain resolution, a subscriber of FluidKey can share their ENS name with multiple parties and a new address will be generated between each resolution. No one will be able to see the previously generated addresses by other parties.

All the addresses are controlled by the same key pair and appear together in FluidKeys UI. The project is in Alpha, sign up for updates on fluidkey.com.

Namehash Labs | @lightwalker.eth

Namehash Labs is an innovation network working to design and develop open source ENS focused infrastructure and public goods. On the call, lightwalker announced two such projects that their team has been developing.

Nameguard

Nameguard is a solution to identify impersonation attempts using ENS names. This product is targeted at other web3 devs to add to their apps.

A few of the features are as follows:

  1. ENS health checks: This feature allows interprets your name records to help you understand the implications of your records (ex Owner, Manager, Resolver, etc)
  2. Smart Auto-Renewal: This will allow you to autorenew your ENS name using a credit card
  3. ENS Profile Completion Score: To spread awareness about all the capabilities of your ENS name, the gamification of a completion score will hopefully incentivise people to use ENS to its full capability

Additionally, Nameguard is participating in ENS’s Small Grants round. Consider voting for them when voting is live here.

NameKit

Inspired by RainbowKit, NameKit is hoping to reduce the cost and complexity of implementing ENS on wallets and dapps.

NameKit has four distinct ENS journeys

  1. Find your ENS idenity
  2. Design your ENS identity
  3. Interact with others
  4. Manage your ENS identity

These user journeys bring all functionality to one place that can be implemented on any site.

NameKit will be an open source public good for anybody to use. The plan is to release NameKit by the end of 2023, look for more public announcements at frENS Day!

World Wide Web3 | Ian

World Wide Web3 is an app that allows you to cryptographically sign a message and globally pin it to a map where your ENS name is your identity. Some ideas around travel and proof-of-location were discussed. Currently WWW3 is on testnet and in beta.

Multi Delegate Contract

Work on a multi delgate token contract for assigning delegation via governance tokens to more than one person is under way. This would allow users who hold ENS to delegate to more than person from the same wallet.

@slobo.eth pulled the data to show some insights on how people voted on small grants and available for anyone to look at.

Most people voted just for one project to enhance their voting strength per project.

Discussion occured around the distribution of voter cards. A new mechinism is under discussion for future small grants rounds. Opening up applications for everybody may expose small grants to sybil attacks which will be avoided

Pay outs to small grants winners will occur next week.

Note: ENS’s Small Grants implementation on snapshot is open-source and availible for anyone to copy, fork, or look through.

Marcus is bringing the ENS DAO Newsletter to gitbook and making it easy to search and navigate! A video demonstration was shown to showcase the power of bringing all the data together.

Namespace | @Cap

Namespace, the ENS subname management tool is introducing the Namespace widget, an easy to add widget to personal websites that expands the space in which names can be registered.

The call discussion was positive. @lightwalker.eth and @clowes.eth voiced that view that this is an exciting and big change that they’ll be weighing in on. @Premm.eth loved the idea of having a competition of execution inside the ecosystem, competition breeds innovation and catering to needs of different groups of people. @slobo.eth compared this to the fact that their are multiple Ethereum execution and consensus clients and that even though the clients perform the same duties, diversity adds to the health of the ecosystem.
