Voting Closes Tuesday November 26th, 2024

Abstract

This executable proposal implements the Governance Distribution Pilot Program approved in EP5.19. Following the community’s selection of the 30k ENS distribution option, this proposal authorizes the transfer of ENS tokens from the treasury to implement the program.

Specification

This proposal authorizes:

  1. The transfer of 30,000 ENS tokens from the DAO treasury to the Meta-governance working group’s main wallet (main.mg.wg.ens.eth) for distribution to eligible recipients
  2. The Meta-governance working group will then distribute these tokens through 2-year linear vesting contracts according to the allocation table below

This distribution follows the quadratic funding method, which is a progressive ratio where recipients receive ENS tokens proportional to the square root of their USDC/ETH contributions during January-September 2024. The complete distribution table is as follows:

  1. Value represents the total received of all transactions
  2. Squared Weight is simply the square root of that value, which is used as a weight
  3. % of total divided that by the total weight
  4. ENS multiplies that percentage to the total budget
  5. % of value received is a comparison of the value received in USDC with the value received in ENS, with ENS at $14

Verification

  • Target: ENS token contract (0xC18360217D8F7Ab5e7c516566761Ea12Ce7F9D72)
  • Recipient: main.mg.wg.ens.eth (0x91c32893216dE3eA0a55ABb9851f581d4503d39b)
  • Amount: 30,000 ENS (30000000000000000000000 in wei)
  • Function: transfer(address,uint256)

The Meta-governance working group will handle subsequent distributions to individual recipients through Hedgey vesting contracts following the approved allocation table.

The transaction will move the 30k $ENS to the main Meta-governance wallet. After the transaction completes, the Meta-governance working group will craft the Hedgey vesting contracts following the above allocation table.

Changelog:

15-Nov: Edited the table to replace the one used in the Snapshot vote with the most recent table posted in the discussion thread here. The text of the Snapshot vote acknowledged that the specific distribution amounts were still being calculated.

Calldata verification

The simulation and tests of EP 5.26 can be found here. Calldata matched the proposal description as expected. The proposal was simulated by proposing, passing, executing, and asserting the difference between states after the ENS transfer operations.

This can be checked by cloning the repo and running:
forge test --match-path src/ens/proposals/ep-5-26/* -vvvv

It’s transferring 30k ENS from the DAO treasury to the Meta-gov WG wallet.

Looks good to submit it on-chain @5pence.eth!

Now it’s just confirming that the calldata submitted on-chain will be the same as the one above.

Sorry if I missed this, has the TX been sent to the meta gov wallet? If so, have the Hedgey vesting contracts been put in place? If not, is there a timeline for the above?

  • The transaction has been completed. You can check it on Etherscan.
  • The vesting contracts are currently in progress, with @5pence.eth as the DRI.
  • While there are no guarantees, we aim to distribute the vesting contracts before the year’s end.

Thanks Marcus
@DHannum8 - Yes, you should absolutely expect the contract this month (before end of year). This is the largest batch of these contracts we’ve delivered yet, and there’s one or two things we’re checking to help streamline the experience for the recipients.

I’ll update here and tag you when we send them out.

The final technical review resulted in changes to the allocation table. There were errors related to Wslyvh, Drips and ETHGlobal.

Wesley Wslyvh was not involved with the DAO in 2024, so he will not be included in the table. The grant that was originally assigned to him belongs to Drips. The amount listed for Drips’ allocation calculation actually belongs to ETHGlobal.

So the changes look like this.
Wslyvh.eth: 50k → 0.
Drips: 10k → 50k.
ETHGlobal: 190k → 200k.

Due to the removal of Wslyvh, all other recipients will receive slightly more tokens, but the total amount will not change.

These errors are my fault. The information in the Ledger was collected using ENS names, Etherscan tags, and public reporting, and I did not study the latter carefully enough in this particular case.

The first distribution round will distribute 27982.2 tokens. This will include all recipients listed in the table except those in the To be clarified section.

Their billing addresses have either not been used for a significant amount of time or are CEX deposit addresses. We will contact them to confirm a valid address to receive the distribution.

@danch.quixote, Thank you!

@ All_the_Recipients - Thank you for your patience while we’ve been reviewing and refining the distribution list. This marks the completion of the final verification of all distribution amounts and destination addresses based on Danche’s work with The ENS Ledger App.
***Except for the 6 recipients listed above in the “To be clarified” section above

The final CSV has been thoroughly checked and all entries have been verified to ensure:

  1. Correct destination addresses
  2. Exact ENS token amounts
  3. Matching entries across verification sheets
  4. Primary ENS names (where applicable)

Call to Action :trumpet:

The final distribution list that will be used to create the contracts can be :point_right:accessed here :point_left:, and the sheet is currently open for commenting.
Please add any questions or concerns directly to the sheet.

Metagov aim to have the contracts created and distributed this week if no issues are reported.

Of the six entities mentioned in this table that need clarification, I believe I can assist in tracking down Lemma, Latin Hackathon, Fluidkey, and ‘Event Support.’

Tagging here @KarelLemma, with whom we previously corresponded regarding Meta-Governance work, as well as @moritz, who is building Fluidkey. I’m also tagging the Term 5 @PublicGoods_Stewards to help identify the recipient of the Latin Hackathon distribution.

Regarding ‘Event Support,’ this may have been a reimbursement for travel to ETH Denver from the Meta-Governance Multi-sig. Best to confirm with @Limes. For further reference, here is the MG Term 5 Q1 spending report: Term 5: Working Group Spending Summary - 2024 Q1

Hi @estmcmxci thanks for tagging and thank you for the continued support @ ENS DAO!

Our address can be found at fluidkey.eth

To all the recipients watching this thread - due to some limited availability across the holidays we haven’t been able to coordinate on getting these sent out as hoped.

We’re still working hard on it and we’ll have them sent out to recipients asap. Thanks for your patience.

What was the requirement for being part of this distribution?

I was also not included in the Drips campaign.

I believe that here is the list of criteria:

  • Be a recipient of funds from the DAO between January 1st and October 1st, 2024.

  • Receive funds directly from the DAO (from the main wallets of working groups or from the wallets of subgroups), or through ETHGlobal (hackers) or ImmuneFi (bug bounty hunters).

  • Receive funds from the DAO specifically as a reward, and not as a reimbursement of expenses. That is, if you received reimbursement for a flight, event, or materials, you do not fall under this criterion.

  • Not be a recipient of past distributions this year. That is, not be a steward, a member of the security council, or a service provider.

I think the best people to contact on this issue are the Ecosystem stewards.

We have encountered an issue with the inability to send a vesting contract to some of the addresses listed above.

The Hedgey vesting contracts are ERC-721 NFTs (e.g., https://etherscan.io/nft/0x73cd8626b3cd47b009e68380720cfe6679a3ec3d/177). However, some contracts, including Gnosis Safe Proxy, do not support the implementation of onERC721Received or safeMint. As a result, we are taking extra time to contact the owners of these addresses to ask them to update their contracts or provide us with valid addresses to send the vesting NFTs (they should be either contracts capable of implementing the above-described methods, or regular wallets).

The list of recipients this issue is related to includes:

If you see yourself on this list and I haven’t contacted you yet, please feel free to message me here or on Telegram @danch.quixote.

For other addresses not on this list, the Metagov working group will send out vesting contracts next week.

Hey, thanks for tagging me. Note on ENS Fairy:

All funds sent from the ecosystem working group to bot.ensfairy.eth are used to gift .eth names, not as payment to me for building it (this is intentional since I work at ENS Labs).

I’m happy to forfeit ENS Fairy’s 251 tokens back to Metagov or the DAO itself.

Hey @danch.quixote - in this case you can use the following EOA address for Fluidkey: 0xB9800F0c6f6DaEA52f8eFe215134f066FD2e3598

EP 5.26 Distribution Update - January 2025

The EP 5.26 implementation is progressing well, with the majority of governance distribution contracts now deployed. Through three distribution batches, approximately 27,000 ENS tokens (90% of the authorized amount) have been allocated through Hedgey vesting contracts to nearly 100 recipients.

Distribution Progress

We’ve completed three major distribution batches via Hedgey vesting contracts:

  1. First Batch (December 31, 2024)

  2. Second Batch (January 25, 2025)

  3. Third Batch (January 25, 2025)

:point_right: You can view all active vesting contracts on the Hedgey Dashboard :tada:
Note: Sometimes the Safari browser has trouble rendering this dashboard

Pending Resolutions

As noted in @danch.quixote’s update, some recipient addresses (contracts and safes that don’t implement ERC-721 support) cannot receive the vesting contracts due to lacking support for onERC721Received or safeMint. The Meta-governance working group continues to work with these recipients to obtain compatible wallet addresses.

The remaining ~3,000 ENS tokens will be distributed once we resolve these technical requirements with the remaining recipients.

Next Steps

  1. For recipients with active vesting contracts:

    • Access your grant via Hedgey
    • Review the comprehensive management guide created by @estmcmxci
    • Consider your delegation strategy
    • Note that vesting begins from the contract creation date and continues for 24 months
  2. For recipients still pending resolution:

    • If you’re on the list of affected addresses, please contact @danch.quixote with an ERC-721 compatible wallet address
    • We’ll continue processing distributions as alternative addresses are provided
    • Ensure you’re offering an address that can receive and call functions on ERC-721s (Essentially the address must be able to receive and transfer NFTs)

For any questions about accessing or managing your vesting contract, please consult the management guide first and then reach out to a metagov steward if needed.

This pilot program represents an exciting step for ENS DAO, introducing a systematic approach to recognizing and engaging our ecosystem’s contributors through governance participation. Thanks to @AvsA’s thoughtful design of this distribution model, we’re expanding governance participation across the ecosystem in a meaningful way. Thanks to @danch.quixote for support with the distribution calculations and @estmcmxci for creating the management documentation.
