2. [Temp Check] Expanding the ENS Foundation Board to Strengthen Operational Accountability for ENS DAO
- Concern expressed about ENS Labs members selecting the committee for ENS Labs’ budget accountability (CoI was mentioned too).
- There was a discussion with Brantly about the possibility of people outside the existing foundation being able to put forth candidates for a foundation role.
- The goal is to have a board made up mostly of independents with experience and knowledge.
- There is openness to playing within parameters, such as requiring a certain number of tokens to endorse a nomination, or something similar.
- The existing board wasn’t chosen with the current tasks in mind.
- Alex Van de Sant plans to resign and will be replaced.
- The existing board wasn’t “instantiated to do these types of activities.”
- There’s concern that selection by the existing foundation erodes the legitimacy of the process.
- Counter proposal by Brantly – Nick Johnson becomes a permanent board member, leaving 4 seats open for others.
- There is a need to introduce an operational standard if the board is set up prior to renewing existing DAO operations.
- Suggestion to renew working group elections in Q3 if there are no changes.
- James is happy to own making a proposal alongside Katherine’s proposal that has one working group remaining for weekly calls, grants, and be a public-facing group.
- The ENS DAO would retain 100% control of the Treasury.
- The Board would be tasked with formulating a budget which would still have to be approved by the ENS DAO.
- MetaGov calls will happen weekly moving forward.
3. ENS DAO Reform Next Steps
- The Retro team has a 12-month work plan for integrating accountability, transparency, and capital allocation infrastructure recommendations.
- The plan assumes the existence of the proposed board.
- The Retro team is willing to present, workshop, or engage with an advisory board to finalize recommendations and the roadmap.
- Two paths forward:
-
- Deliver the final report for the DAO to use as it sees fit.
-
- Form an advisory board to mobilize and operationalize the research findings.
-
4. [Temp Check] Representative Advisory Body for Co-Created Governance Reform
- The advisory body is seen as a key enabler for reforms, providing authoritative feedback and proposing recommendations for approval.
- The advisory body idea originated from a workshop and is intended to bridge the gap between the current state of the DAO and the desired future state.
- The goal is to determine whether to establish the advisory body or not, to avoid continued ambiguity.
- The advisory board should fulfill two critical functions:
-
- Provide feedback on the Retro team’s recommendations.
-
- Formally vote and collectively support the recommendations to the ENS ecosystem.
-
- The suspension of the program has put SPP providers under pressure to understand their future and financial stability.
- Supporting parallel efforts, such as establishing an advisory body for long-term ideation while pushing forward on immediate needs like the foundation and SPP setup.
- Metagov.org engagement is primarily on assessment rather than action.
- Mike will deliver the final report, which will then be open for feedback for a week before being finalized and presented.
5. Open discussion
