Term 6 Grants - Summary

Term 6 Grants

The Ecosystem Working Group was established with the passing of EP0.4 whose mandate includes:

Continuing development and improvement of the ENS protocol and ecosystem, with a focus on all technical matters related to ENS

Ecosystem grants are designed to support projects and developers contributing to the ENS ecosystem, with a strong bias towards technically oriented projects.

Grant funding is done retroactively based on value created for the ecosystem. This can be demonstrated by historical usage and/or novel use cases. The Stewards of Ecosystem are empowered by [EP1.8] to use their discretion when approving ecosystem grants.

This thread serves as the ongoing summary of grants by the Ecosystem Working Group for the sixth term.

Fast ENS API for web3 apps

The standard approach of querying ENS contracts directly can be quite slow for many use cases and can quickly eat up RPC limits if you’re not careful.

To help with this, I built an incredibly fast API for resolving and reverse-resolving ENS names and addresses (30-50ms with a warm cache).

This API has been online since December 2021 with no known downtime and has served hundreds of millions of requests (currently ~40 million requests per month), powering sites like Relay.link, Proof of Play/Pirate Nation, and Juicebox.

API docs are here: About ENS Ideas
And open source code here: GitHub - frolic/ens-ideas

JustaName: decentralized identity platform for brands and communities.

Our 2024 Roadmap:

  • JustaName V1 platform: allows any ENS domain owner to issue offchain subnames from that domain. Businesses/Communities are also provided with a developer and admin dashboard: they can monitor subname use, revoke names, reserve names. All of this is accessible through our website by creating a new workspace and generating a unique API key in an automated workflow. The rest can be done using our Developer kit (APIs + JustaName Core and React SDK).
  • We designed and built from the start a modular software architecture, enabling us to provide unique security and performance in the ecosystem.
  • JustVerified: An open-source verifiable credentials issuer tailored to work with ENS names. JustVerified allows users to verify their social handles ownership, while holding their credentials within their text records. DApps can use this technology to gate functionalities on their platforms to verified users.
  • SIWENS: An extension of the Sign-In with Ethereum (SIWE) protocol, SIWENS adds verification of ENS name ownership during authentication. This feature allows dApps to perform decentralized authorization on users’ metadata.
  • JustWeb3: An open-source widget built to make ENS integration easier for dApps.

We’ll keep the 2025 and most recent progress and roadmap in our upcoming application to the service provider grant.

Use of Funds:

  • Will help us finance our costs running a robust modular architecture back-end and infrastructure.
  • And to whatever extent we can, help with our payroll.
