1. Core Updates

@gregskril

Gasless DNSSEC

Gasless DNSSEC has been deployed on Sepolia!

Gasless DNSSEC allows DNS name owners to use their existing domains in the web3 ecosystem for free. For instructions on how to turn DNS names into ENS on the Sepolia testnet, follow the instructions here.

Ownership Tab

A new tab called the Ownership tab has been added to the ENS App in efforts to make the relationship between owners and managers more intuitive.

ENS Blog

The ENS Blog has launched! Check out the blog here.

2. ENS Fellowship

It was announced that @Premm.eth is the winner of the ENS Fellowship Grant, he’s excited to continue heads down building on ENS and is looking forward to meeting others at Devconnect.

3. Project Highlights

Fluidkey | Antonio Seveso

Fluidkey was the winner of the overall ENS prize at ETH Rome and came to the call to present their hackathon project.

Fluidkey allows a user to generate an infinite amount of stealth addresses when resolving ENS names. Using ENS offchain resolution, a subscriber of FluidKey can share their ENS name with multiple parties and a new address will be generated between each resolution. No one will be able to see the previously generated addresses by other parties.

All the addresses are controlled by the same key pair and appear together in FluidKeys UI. The project is in Alpha, sign up for updates on fluidkey.com.

Namehash Labs | @lightwalker.eth

Namehash Labs is an innovation network working to design and develop open source ENS focused infrastructure and public goods. On the call, lightwalker announced two such projects that their team has been developing.

Nameguard

Nameguard is a solution to identify impersonation attempts using ENS names. This product is targeted at other web3 devs to add to their apps.

A few of the features are as follows:

  1. ENS health checks: This feature allows interprets your name records to help you understand the implications of your records (ex Owner, Manager, Resolver, etc)
  2. Smart Auto-Renewal: This will allow you to autorenew your ENS name using a credit card
  3. ENS Profile Completion Score: To spread awareness about all the capabilities of your ENS name, the gamification of a completion score will hopefully incentivise people to use ENS to its full capability

Additionally, Nameguard is participating in ENS’s Small Grants round. Consider voting for them when voting is live here.

NameKit

Inspired by RainbowKit, NameKit is hoping to reduce the cost and complexity of implementing ENS on wallets and dapps.

NameKit has four distinct ENS journeys

  1. Find your ENS idenity
  2. Design your ENS identity
  3. Interact with others
  4. Manage your ENS identity

These user journeys bring all functionality to one place that can be implemented on any site.

NameKit will be an open source public good for anybody to use. The plan is to release NameKit by the end of 2023, look for more public announcements at frENS Day!

1W3 | @hidayath.eth

Announcing the 1w3 decentralized website buildathon! Send your submissions here.

Deform is also now supported in 1W3! Check out the announcement post here.

4. Small grants

Voting on small grants is expected to commence next week

@gregskril

Multi Delegate Contract

Work on a multi delgate token contract for assigning delegation via governance tokens to more than one person is under way. This would allow users who hold ENS to delegate to more than person from the same wallet.

EVM Gateway

Work has been progressing on EVM Gateway.

EVM Gateway is infrastructure to ENS working on layer 2s as it allows layer 1 smart contracts to read data from layer 2 contracts (Specifically OP Stack Layer 2s)

2. On-Chain proposals coming Friday

@5pence.eth

Two executable onchain votes are going up tomorrow, November 3, 2023

  1. Karpatkey is updating the treasury contracts to whitelist new treasury positions via executable proposal
  2. The proposal to fund the working groups is going to onchain vote

3. Small Grants

ENS Small Grants Round 10 voting came to an end. Congrats to the top 10 teams who won prizes.

ENS Small Grants Insights

@slobo.eth pulled the data to show some insights on how people voted on small grants and available for anyone to look at.

Most people voted just for one project to enhance their voting strength per project.

Discussion occured around the distribution of voter cards. A new mechinism is under discussion for future small grants rounds. Opening up applications for everybody may expose small grants to sybil attacks which will be avoided

Pay outs to small grants winners will occur next week.

Note: ENS’s Small Grants implementation on snapshot is open-source and availible for anyone to copy, fork, or look through.

4. Project Highlights

ENS DAO Archive | @estmcmxci

Marcus is bringing the ENS DAO Newsletter to gitbook and making it easy to search and navigate! A video demonstration was shown to showcase the power of bringing all the data together.

Namespace | @Cap

Namespace, the ENS subname management tool is introducing the Namespace widget, an easy to add widget to personal websites that expands the space in which names can be registered.

Stay tuned for the public release.

5. Proposal for Service Provider Streams

@Avsa made a post on the forum introducing a potential new stream to ENS builders.

The call discussion was positive. @lightwalker.eth and @clowes.eth voiced that view that this is an exciting and big change that they’ll be weighing in on. @Premm.eth loved the idea of having a competition of execution inside the ecosystem, competition breeds innovation and catering to needs of different groups of people. @slobo.eth compared this to the fact that their are multiple Ethereum execution and consensus clients and that even though the clients perform the same duties, diversity adds to the health of the ecosystem.

:birthday: Happy Two-Year Anniversary of ENS DAO!

1. Core Updates

@gregskril

Last 24 hours: 8 repos with different commits. Good sign of ongoing activity.
Otherwise, no change to main updates below:

Multi Delegate Contract

Work on a multi delgate token contract for assigning delegation via governance tokens to more than one person is under way. This would allow users who hold ENS to delegate to more than person from the same wallet.

EVM Gateway

Work has been progressing on EVM Gateway.

EVM Gateway is infrastructure to ENS working on layer 2s as it allows layer 1 smart contracts to read data from layer 2 contracts (Specifically OP Stack Layer 2s)

If you’d like to check out the github repo, it can be found here.

Gasless DNSSEC

Work around fixing bugs related to gasless DNSSEC is in process.

Gasless DNSSEC allows DNS name owners to use their existing domains in the web3 ecosystem for free. For instructions on how to turn DNS names into ENS on the Sepolia testnet, follow the instructions here.

2. On-Chain proposals voting ending today

Two executable onchain votes have reached quorum and are about to pass!

  1. Karpatkey to update the treasury contracts and whitelist new treasury positions
  2. Fund the working groups

@slobo.eth:

  • Asks for a ‘call to arms’ to ensure that we get as many people as possible involved with the DAO and interested in becoming stewards
  • Two-step process to become a steward:
      1. Nominate yourself on the forum
      1. Need 10,000 votes from delegates

3. Small Grants

@limes:

  • Small Grants will get paid-out today once list received from Greg

@slobo.eth:

  • Will run another small grants process. Need to coordinate with public goods to settle on a date. Most likely will happen 23rd November

Note: ENS’s Small Grants implementation on snapshot is open-source and availible for anyone to copy, fork, or look through.

4. Project Highlights

Eth.cd | @hidayath.eth

  • Building a social network around ens domains.
  • Social Score based on number of ENS records, in future will take into account other protocols
  • Around 70k unique names with avatars; Top 100 displayed on homescreen
  • Want to build standards for ENS records (e.g. Instagram link)
  • Planning to integrate all social/social graph tools into their protocol (e.g. Ethereum Follow Protocol)
  • Launching in ~21 Days

5. Proposal for Service Provider Streams is going to pass!

Reference: @Avsa post on the forum.

Thoughts

@avsa.eth:

  • Idea is not to fund one service provider, but fund multiple candidates. (Diversity adds to the health of the ecosystem.)
  • Can’t have a budget larger than $1m and need to have 1m ENS approval. Will approve teams with highest votes and go through list until budget is met.
  • Important to note that if (for example) a team’s budget is $600k, but only $400k left in budget, then will skip to team asking for $400k or less. This incentivizes service providers to give a fair, unexaggerated price.

Discussion around how to prepare budget:
Budget submission is for 18 months, but teams will be re-evaluated at 12 months. Discussion centered around whether to prepare budget for 12 or 18 months.

@slobo.eth:

  • Recommend have delivery/success ready by month 11, so go into evaluation period on a high note and don’t get funds revoked

6. Weekly Review of Canny

Engagement and upvoting on Canny are helpful, offering direct feedback to ENS Labs & Working Groups that benefit the ENS protocol. ENS.canny.io includes feature requests, integrations, bug reports, and community upvoting. Read more on the :scroll: Forum here.

    • Is there a niche ENS DAO isn’t thinking about/aware of? Tell us about it and why you’re the Team to build it!
  • High-level ideas can be found in the Snapshot: Snapshot
  • This is an opportunity for Teams to give full attention to ENS through appropriate funding and support

  • NameHash Labs · GitHub for documentation; open and public API on AWS
  • Coming Soon: Identification of dangerous name configurations, ENS autorenew, ENS profile completion scores, and ENS webfont
  • NameKit: not releasing today but releasing smart contracts: GitHub - namehash/namekit-contracts: Earn revenue for helping ENS grow

1. ENS Labs Updates @gregskril

Launched integration with Phantom Wallet!

Yesterday conducted Twitter Space with OP Team on EVM Gateway

Art Basel happening this weekend. ENS Labs partnering with NFT Project for BBQ

‘Manager app suggests Goerli’ bug on app.ens.domains was fixed

Soon will be able to verify contracts on Arbitrum through EVM gateway!

  • Cheaper way to update and manage ENS data
  • Note: Project result of hackathon, shows importance of hosting. Will continue hosting as have high ROI despite costs

2. Provider Streams

Submissions can be found here: [EP4.9][Social] Select providers for EP4.7 streams

3. Project Highlights

@clowes.eth from https://unruggablenames.com

  • Register and resolve subnames from L2, currently OP Stack (Sepolia is OP testnet)
  • Set renewal controllers, guarantee similar prices year-to-year
  • This demo will set up from ENS test chain (L2): https://ens-chain-sepolia.unruggablenames.com/eco-demo.eth
  • Documentation on Mirror can be found here: 'ENS Chain' — clowes.eth
  • Planning on running own network of gateways
  • ENS could run on an app chain, want to test out idea and seek feedback from ecosystem stakeholders in the pursuit of scaling ENS. Expense of chain is posting proofs to L1
  • Question: How handle abuse/impersonation at subname level? Answer: No governing body from impersonation, difficult/philosophical question, requires additional thought and research
  • Question: How will resolve collisions? Answer: Can’t acquire domain if already owned on L1. Can’t register on L1 and L2 at the same time. Researching edge cases around time between registering on L2 and proving on L1
  • Thoughts based on above questions: Iteratively working on/thinking about/researching running names on L2 directly. Would make acquiring cheaper and quicker. But security tradeoffs need to be considered and addressed

@lightwalker.eth from namehashlabs.org

  • Mission is to help ENS grow and bring ENS into apps that millions are using
  • Incentivize through proposal of referral program
  • Temp Check doc on referral program can be found here: [Temp Check] ENS Referral Program - Google Docs
  • Working to solve economic incentive (game theory) issues around different participants in a referral program
  • Working on design prototype in Figma for user journeys. Will release Figma for feedback in the near future
