Hello and welcome to the Ethereum Name Service DAO Newsletter!

New editions are published on the 1st and 15th of every month.

This newsletter is available on the ENS DAO Governance Forum and Substack.

We encourage any feedback, questions, or comments!

:newspaper: Newsletter Updates

  • After feedback, we are returning to a bi-weekly release schedule. New editions are published on the 1st and 15th of every month.
  • We now have a dWeb homepage hosted on IPFS at ensdaonews.eth.limo or ensnews.eth.limo We plan to continue migrating the newsletter and its content to decentralized services this year, with a fully IPFS-hosted blog and mailing list functionality.
  • Revue, Twitter’s newsletter platform, is shutting down this week on January 18th. Subscribers there need to subscribe to our Substack to continue receiving email updates after this edition.
  • We now have a Global section to feature multilingual articles.
  • The full archive of our previous editions is now available in its own category on the ENS DAO Forum.
  • We have applied to the upcoming Gitcoin Grants Alpha Round. As of publication, the grant application is pending approval. More information about the Gitcoin Alpha Round is available here.

:memo: Ecosystem Updates

  • On January 5th, ENS hosted its first Office Hours of the year on Twitter. The Office Hours spaces help facilitate exchange among builders within the ENS community and the greater Web3 ecosystem. Builders can share projects they are working on that contribute to the space. Notes from this space can be found on the forum.
  • The following week, a second Office Hours space featured a presentation from Console.xyz, a community platform based on Web3 principles, as well as a short presentation from .ART. Due to a technical glitch, this space was not recorded. Notes from the January 12th space can be found on the forum.
  • On January 9th, ENS DAO hosted a space to share information about our working groups. The DAO introduced new and returning stewards, and discussed a little bit about how work happens in each working group. Notes from the space can be found on the forum.
  • Gregory Rocco, co-founder of Spruce ID, provided a December update on EP1.6 - Community Run Identity Server (formally called EP10).
  • @dr3a.eth spun up a very insightful thread about CCIP-read, which you can read here.

:balance_scale: Meta-Governance

The Meta-Governance working group hosted its weekly meeting on January 10th at 7PM UTC.

Endowment Updates from Karpatkey

  • Testing Progress: Our tech team has successfully completed testing on the Zodiac Roles Modifier presets related to the proposed strategy. The next step is to conduct small-scale replication of the ENS strategy for a second round of testing. ENS stewards will be invited to participate in this phase.
  • Executable Voting Proposal: We had initially presented an approach for implementation, but after reviewing technical details with our tech team, we have determined that some changes might be beneficial. We will be reviewing and validating the approach with ENS Stewards before posting on the forum, which we anticipate will lead to executable voting.
  • Audits: Audit report by Sub 7 and Ackee are still pending. No critical issues have been found so far.
  • Financial Core Unit: We are in the process of deploying the Financial Core Unit with the help of Metropolis.

ETHDenver is the next big event for ENS DAO, where people can meet up in real life. ENS DAO will have a presence, and we are hoping to have a booth with a few core team and DAO members.

The Public Goods working group hosted its weekly meeting on January 12th at 6PM UTC.

General DAO News

  • Budgets will be presented this month. There will be two votes, the first on snapshot, and then an executable vote on-chain.
  • There are upcoming votes for Karpatkey’s endowment allocation.
  • ETH Denver is coming soon!

New Initiatives

  • Last term, our main spending was on Gitcoin grants, small grants, and the Public Goods scholarship program. Small grants were a large success.
  • This term, our focus and intent is on core projects and builders that are making web3 and Ethereum better and easier to use.
  • We want to continue experimenting with how to provide grants and keep testing to create a mix of a scholarship and a grants round. Something that can be put to a vote but also provides funding over the long term, perhaps more streams.
  • We want to experiment with the scholarship initiative, but instead of streaming funding for a fixed amount of time, it will provide a stream of funding for as long as the builder/project provides support.
  • Although the goal is to fund developers, we want to create positive externalities to make ENS accessible to under-developed communities.

@jefflau.eth, Frontend & Solidity developer at ENS Labs, provided a new update on the status of the Name Wrapper.

:gear: Integrations

  • Coinbase Wallet has expanded access to free cb.id names to their Coinbase Wallet mobile app, powered by ENS.
  • CoinLedger recently added integration for ENS names. It offers automatic tax reporting for all ENS-based transactions, calculates gains and losses, and auto-generates the necessary tax forms.
  • ChainSafe is developing a privacy layer for ENS which utilizes the Aztec Network. Read more on the Chainsafe blog.

:lock: Security Tip

As reported by Web3 security agency PeckShield, fake $ENS airdrop scams continue. This example shows that even accounts marked as “Verified” are often compromised and used to deploy a lookalike page that appears almost exactly like the real one.

These types of lookalike accounts do everything possible to appear like the legitimate account in hopes of tricking unsuspecting victims into giving up their private information, such as their crypto wallet’s seed phrase.

:warning: REMEMBER

  • NEVER give your private seed phrase to anyone, or enter it into any website, for any reason. Your seed phrase has the same function as your password, and with it an attacker is granted complete access to your crypto assets.
  • There is no second airdrop! Anything that says there is - even in what appears to be from a legitmate source - is lying to you, and wants to steal your crypto!
